Christmas Appeal 2019 - Giving Gifts of Hope
This week saw the launch of this year’s Christmas Appeal – Giving Gifts of Hope.
Why Uganda?
In a population of 42.7 million, more than 56% of Uganda’s children are deprived of six or more things or activities deemed essential by the majority of Ugandans.
The nature of poverty is multidimensional, and children have both material and social needs - including health care and education, a social and family life, clean and safe drinking water, housing that is not squalid and overcrowded, adequate clothing, and regular meals with sufficient and nutritious food. In other words, in order to grow up and achieve their full potential, Ugandan children need access to a wide variety of items that the majority of the population considers necessary for an adequate standard of living - i.e. ‘socially perceived necessities’ (taken from UNICEF’s Situation Analysis of Children in Uganda 2019).
What difference would my donation make?
Every donation however big or small, can make a huge difference in the lives of orphans, vulnerable children and communities in Uganda.
£1.80 provides 1 meal at Christmas time.
£10 covers the cost for one child for the Christmas Party, where they can enjoy themselves with their friends at a play and water park, and enjoy chicken, chips and pop!
£36 provides a Food Package (around 20 meals) for a family.
We are raising funds to provide…
33 Food Packages - £1,188
£36 each - Food Packages for community families, families of resettled and fostered children, and families of staff who give their time each Christmas. Each package includes bread, sugar, soda, eggs, spices, margarine, beef, chicken, pasta, cooking oil, milk and more. Each package contains enough for 20 meals/servings - that’s just £1.80 each.
Christmas Party for 76 - £760
£10 each - A Christmas Party for 76 children at a water and play park, for all the children at the Children's Home and those supported on the Community Education Support Programme. Who doesn’t love a Christmas Party!
Christmas Food for the Children’s Home - £700
£10 each - Food for the Christmas season's celebrations for the 70 children and staff at the Children's Home. In Uganda, Christmas is a time for celebration, a time for feasting, and a time for singing and dancing.
3 x Hernia Operations - £855
£285 each - to provide surgery and rehabilitation for 3 children (2 girls aged 7, and their brother age 12). All have umbilical hernias ranging from 3cm to 7cm in diameter which are extremely uncomfortable, and need surgery as soon as possible.
4 x Solar Batteries - £1,500
£375 each - to replace the solar backup batteries at the Children’s Home as the existing batteries can now only provide around 30 minutes of backup power.
The batteries provide a necessary supply of power in the event of a power outage, which does happen quite often!
None of this will be possible without your support, so please help us to make a difference this Christmas. You can donate in any of the following ways…
